PASSWORD 3.00

New Password enables pupils to take responsibility for learning their own spellings. They use the LOOK COVER WRITE CHECK process to learn how to spell words and prints out results for their immediate use. Their password file is also kept on disc. This tracks their progress as more words are added to their vocabulary, as well as repeating words from previous sessions randomly until they can spell them perfectly three times in a row.

GETTING STARTED

• Load the program by double-clicking the !Password icon in the directory window.
  • Click on the !Password icon on the iconbar and the password window will appear
  • You will be asked to enter your password [See Choices below]
  • To open an existing password file, type in your password.
  • To open the CHOICES window, type in 1234.[You may change this later.]
  • To open a new password file, type in 0 (zero)
    • You will the asked to enter a name and then a password
  • Your file will be opened and the LEARN window will appear

  CHOICES

  1.   Click the !Password icon
  2. When the PASSWORD window appears type in "1234"
     • Click O K and the Choices Window will appear.
  3. To choose another file, click on "New Word File" [The default file loaded is shown in the window.]
     • The FILES directory will appear
     •  Drag the chosen file on to the Choices window. It will replace the original one.
  4.  Click to choose whether words from the master file are loaded in sequence or randomly [At the moment words may only be loaded in sequence]
  5. By default, 10 words are selected: 5 new and 5 old.[The first session is only 5 new words]. This may not seem many. Over a period, however, pupils will build up a large file of words to learn, even assuming they are successful every time. The program will not allow the file to grow beyond fifty new words. If it does so,old words will be substituted until the number in the pupil file has been reduced.
     • The program finds the last new word in the pupil's file and continues to add new words[new to a MAXIMUM of 10] to the pupil's file from this point.
  6.  Click to choose to include old words from the pupil's file
     • If chosen, up to 10 old words will be added to the new ones when the pupil uses the program
  7.   Click to have the banner on or off
  8.   Click a button in the SPEED panel to select a speed from Slow to Fast.
  9.   Click OK if you do not wish to save any new settings.
  10.   Click Save Choices to make these changes permanent.
  11. The window will close and the PASSWORD window will open to begin

  LEARN

  • Notice that your name will appear and the number of words currently in your file at the bottom of the window
  • Click PLAY to begin
    • Your words will be loaded
  • Then click GO
    • The first word will be displayed in the top box for some seconds.
      •  How long will depend on the length of the word and the Speed setting [See CHOICES]
    • After it has been hidden, type in the word from memory.
    •  If a red cross appears, your word is wrong:the correct word is displayed to compare with it.
      •  You have two more tries to spell it correctly.
      • When is hidden again, type in your next attempt.
    •  If a green tick appears next to your word, it is correct.
  •  Click GO or press TAB for the next word.

    NOTE:

    If the word is correct on the first attempt, a tick will be recorded next to it.

    Otherwise, a cross will appear.

  • After the words have been attempted, clicking PRINT will produce ONE printout for current player.
    • Others can be obtained by pressing CTRL P

  PUPIL PASSWORD FILE

  • When the pupil chooses a new list of words to learn, these are saved into the pupil's file.
    • [It's filename is the password of the pupil, and may be found in directory:PUPILS]
  • When the pupil chooses to include old words in the list to learn, these are chosen at random from the pupil's file
  • If the pupil is correct on the first attempt, a tick is placed in the file after that word. Otherwise no tick is added and even those already there will be removed.[Instead of a tick, the printout records a !]
  • After three ticks have been gained, the word stays in the file, but is not chosen for OLD words,as the pupil is presumed to have learned it.
